Temper
Aggression Detection Watch

Concept Description

In the forensic psychiatry, aggression is an important topic for the safety of the staff and patients. Incidents involving aggression can cause injuries to the staff and fellow patients. This will make it harder for them to reintegrate into society. Research shows that it is possible to detect beforehand when a patient’s arousal level is rising by using the conductance of the skin, through sensors.

In order to create awareness of a patient’s own arousal level, temper was designed, acting as an extra sense of the body. It will slowly vibrate in a breathing like pattern when a patient is in a calm state. If the arousal level of patient starts to rise, it will react by vibrating more powerful and thus lets the wearer know their arousal level. Inspired by a watch and using vibrations as feedback, Temper is not noticeable to others who don’t know the product. The main aim of this product is to help patients not to lose their temper. Competency Reflecion

I used all competency areas for this project and had an holistic design process. I turned my weakness into strenghts by all the feedback that I received and could use. Using research papers throughout the process, helped to make my concept stronger and be able to move on. You don’t need to user test everything if someone else already has done this. It is the first time I really had value out of these research papers, instead of using them as inspiration which I did earlier, I could really validate assumptions using them and by this improved my scientific approach.

My fascination for electronics has expanded by creating and testing my own sensor. I loved to see the programming come to life in the final user testing when the device reacted as it was supposed to be. Creating a physical 3D model for the watch was still though for me, but sketching a lot and searching for inspiration helped to create a nice looking design. Still I have to find my visual identity as a product designer. Dealing with a real problem and talking to user that will really crave for your product helped to broaden my view on society and users. The business and entrepreneurship will come more after the finalisation of this report as we have to see where it brings me. I had an interesting conversation with someone from Philips who told me to take contact with them, so we’ll see what it brings me.
