I like to challenge myself by setting goals, becoming better and by this getting the most out of myself. Becoming Dutch Champion in juggling at the age of 15 has showed me what hard work and dedication can bring you. But juggling has brought me much more than just a hobby, juggling is the reason I started designing.
Gaining skills autodidact is something that is in my blood. When I needed a website to promote myself, I learned how to make that website. Performing, giving workshops, organising conventions, presenting shows; all these skills I gained because of juggling. This way of working is also why I chose the study Industrial Design. The area of design is always changing, making it never boring since you have to keep challenging yourself and learning. The broader the skillset, the more challenges you can cope with.
For me, my relatives stand for life lesson that I pursue. Follow my vision like my dad, support others like my mom, keep exploring like my brother, take responsibility for my sister and be dedicated like my girlfriend. Complete story read here: Who am I?
When designing, it has to have a clear value for people for whom I’m designing (human-centred design). I see products as an extension to fulfil a certain goal for someone. It acts like a tool with different interactions that have a low threshold. The focus is more on what you can reach as a person, using my products, than the product itself. My products represent honesty by visually using natural materials and colours like white, dark grey with an detail of light blue. As a designer, I can help people to make an idea reality and this is what I love to do using my broad set of skills.
Having a passion for something you do is the most wonderful thing in my opinion. I always shared my skills and knowledge with others in order for them but also for me to grow. Being valuable for people is my drive and their passion is my inspiration. I want to challenge myself more by gaining and improving skills and knowledge so I can be more valuable for more people. In this way I keep myself motivated and happy and make the world a little bit better at the same time.
The way the juggling community works has showed me how it can also be used in relation to product design. The side activities juggling brings with it, has given me certain skills and the life lessons. Juggling will remain a way of escaping all my thoughts and going to juggling festival has become the same as seeing my friends again. I focus less on becoming a technical juggler, but still want to see what happens if I use my design knowledge with creating a juggling act. Juggling has taught me a lot already and it will continue to do this just for a little while.
