This project is made for the client Tante Netty, which is a social design collective situated in the neighbourhood Woensel-West. With creative project they try to improve the image and social coherence of the neighbourhood. But they wanted to know what really happens behind the doors of the inhabitants, what do they find important?
The best solution is to just talk the people, but that is easier said than done. Lilly is a tool that can be used to show would you value in your neighbourhood. By creating a balance on certain subjects determined by Tante Netty, inhabitants could visualise what they find important. Subjects such as health, image, safety and
work on which the neighbourhood want to improve. Moving the light bulbs around triggers personal stories which acts as input for projects.
Tante Netty is not the only organisation that wants to improve the neighbourhood. Also these other organisations are curious about what the neighbourhood wants. Certainly because the history of the neighbourhood made that the trust in these organisations isn’t present anymore. With this installation
the people of the organisations could go on the streets themselves and start a dialogue. The movement of the light bulbs are tracked and can be later analysed and compared.
In general I’m proud of the results of this
project. Having such a close connection
with the users was a new experience which
I liked a lot. This project description already
warned students that it is an complex one,
but I think with the thorough research it was
made easier to understand what my added
value as an designer could be. I have shaped
my vision and identity further by this project
and know better where to go now in the
future.
From the decisions I have made, even though
they were not the best, I have learned a lot.
Keeping an focus is important but I shouldn’t
close up and take feedback well. I always
thought that communication was one of my
strong competencies but apparently under
stress it is not.
The end results is up to my expectations
with a nice quality finish. New techniques
have been learned and more importunately
the confidence that I can quickly build
prototypes. Still coming up with concepts
is a hard struggles were I think too big and
abstract. I should focus more on individual
elements form which I can build up and
merge requirements, instead of trying to
solve the puzzle all at once.
